Diabetes
What is Diabetes?
It is a chronic metabolic disease in which carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism is impaired and blood sugar rises as a result of insulin deficiency and/or insulin resistance.
What are Diabetes Types?
Type 1 Diabetes: It occurs as a result of an autoimmune (our immune attacking our own organs) response that develops against the pancreatic gland. Since insulin cannot be produced in the body, insulin must be used. It is usually seen in children and teenagers. Patients are mostly frail.
Type 2 Diabetes: It develops as a result of decreased insulin secretion from the pancreas and/or insulin resistance. Patients are generally middle-aged and older. It is often accompanied by obesity.
Gestational Diabetes: It occurs during pregnancy and usually resolves after delivery. However, these people have an increased risk of developing diabetes later on.
